At Furniture & Finishes, we help you transform fine old pieces of wood furniture that may be a little worn or neglected into beautiful, functional furnishings for your home or office. These may be items that have been handed down through family members that have sentimental significance. Or they may be “Finds” from a special trip or visit to an antique store or consignment shop.

We have helped clients who are working with an interior designer to re-craft the look of their space and desire to change the look of an existing contemporary piece to suit the new environment. Some have brought to us pieces they found during an antiquing trip that they wanted incorporated into a home remodeling project. Others have brought to us a vintage item that had been in the family for years, but had seen better days, and wanted to rejuvenate the piece, returning it to its intended beauty.

To begin a refinishing or restoration project, we work with you to evaluate the piece and understand the outcome you desire. Questions are addressed such as…

  • Can the piece be stripped to bare wood to provide a clean start to the work or is another approach required?
  • Are repairs to dents and dings required?
  • Are the joints solid or do they require re-assembly?
  • Does the piece have veneer, inlay, marquetry or parquetry that is in need of attention?
  • Any pieces or molding missing that requires replacement?
  • What color is desired? Is glazing or toning desired or appropriate?
  • What type of finish should be applied? … Shellac, varnish and lacquer are a few of the available options. Time period of the piece and service use are some of the considerations.
  • What type of sheen should be applied … satin, high gloss, French polish?
  • Is installation a factor in the project?
  • What are the schedule requirements?

A detailed work plan is prepared to address your requirements as well as the technical aspects of the work, and then the work is executed. Our goal is to make sure you are delighted by the results.
